Mobile operators in India have started publishing mobile network coverage maps on their websites. Now, anyone can check in advance whether voice calls and mobile internet work in a specific location. These maps became mandatory after updates to the regulations approved by the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India).
The new rules apply to both wireless and wired services and came into effect in the fall of 2024. One of the key changes is the requirement to publish coverage maps for any operator providing services over a mobile network.
The format and level of detail for these maps are defined by the regulator itself. The goal is to help people understand where service is available and where it might drop. The maps cover areas where the operator officially declares network availability and are made publicly accessible.

The initiative is aimed at increasing transparency. Operators note that it also reduces the number of complaints and allows customers to evaluate coverage before signing up. Precise figures on overall network reach have not been published yet, but are expected soon.
Coverage maps have already appeared on the websites of major Indian operators. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea published theirs before the April 1, 2025 deadline, as required by the regulator. However, BSNL and MTNL are lagging behind. Despite the TRAI’s directive, they have yet to release their data. As a result, network availability remains unclear in some regions — especially in areas where there are already limited service options.
The maps aren’t just uploaded as static images — they’re interactive. Users can enable location detection, search for a region manually, or filter by technology: 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G. All operators follow the same format. TRAI provided a technical template in advance, so the interfaces are consistent and easy to navigate.
Map colors are standardized, and buttons respond without delay. For added convenience, the TRAI website features links to all the maps in one place. They load quickly, and users can find their desired area in under a minute.
If a map shows coverage, but the signal is weak in reality, users can submit feedback. A special form has been added to the site for this purpose. However, it’s immediately noted that signal strength depends on many factors. Indoors, reception is often weaker, and in certain areas, even where a network is available, stability may vary. The map only indicates where coverage should exist — no guarantees are made.
Overall, studying the maps makes it clear that Indian operators have made significant progress in developing their mobile networks in recent years. This is confirmed by users themselves, who are increasingly downloading apps that require stable internet connections. One example is betting and gambling apps. Today, IPL betting apps are becoming more and more popular. People use them not only indoors, but also at stadiums during matches — which shows that mobile coverage in those locations is solid. And there are plenty of similar examples.
These maps aren’t just for convenience. They’re also practical tools. They allow users to see how operators cover different areas — where the signal is dense and where there are gaps. Such data is used by local authorities, businesses, and engineers. It helps identify where connectivity is truly needed and where there’s still only talk.
