Edesur Dominicana S.A. Chooses Telrad to Create Robust Custom LTE Network
Energy company utilizes Telrad equipment, services and expertise for vital communications infrastructure.
[LOD, Israel – March 25, 2021] – Telrad Networks, a global provider of innovative LTE telecom solutions, has partnered with Edesur Dominicana S.A. to provide the core infrastructure for the energy company’s all-new private LTE network. The partnership between the two companies originated in a public bidding process. Telrad’s tender was selected on account of its compelling cost advantages, its strong technological foundation and the company’s history of success in similar deployments.
“We needed to develop a scalable private network that would serve as the communication backbone for our entire electrical network,” explains Edesur Network and Communications Manager, Hafet Guerrero Cueto. “For the sake of security and uninterrupted delivery of the critical service that we provide to residents and businesses, it was important that our company maintained end-to-end control of the network and that its availability would be close to 100%.”
Edesur relies on telecontolled switches (TCS) and other devices to distribute power steadily and efficiently to its 800,000 customers throughout the region. The quality of the communications network and its real-world performance therefore has a vital impact on the company’s operations.
Prior to the installation of the new network, Edesur had been using the local General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, which is based on aging 2G and 3G technologies. They experienced regular and prolonged service outages. The new LTE network operates on an exclusive 2,300–2,310 MHz frequency that was licensed to Edesur by local regulatory agency Indotel.
Telrad’s modern solution consists of five BreezeCOMPACT 3000 advanced LTE base stations, two BreezeWAY carrier-class evolved packet core (EPC) platforms and 70 CPE9000 high-gain end-user devices. This hardware combination will revolutionize the speed and reliability of Edesur’s network, particularly in challenging non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios, while providing a solid, cost-effective basis for future growth.
In addition, Telrad is providing Edesur with a network management software (NMS) solution and related services as part of the arrangement. These services include dedicated on-premises communications technical support services (CTSS) training to ensure that Edesur staff are fully trained in deploying and operating the equipment.
“Edesur asked for an end-to-end solution not only in terms of control but also in terms of deployment. We were very pleased to have been chosen to provide them with a comprehensive, tailor-made LTE network that covered everything from hardware and software to training,” says CEO of Telrad LATAM Services, Uri Dotan.
“Through our equipment and support, Telrad has delivered the stable network that Edesur wanted with the high availability that they needed—and all at the right price point. They can now leverage this new LTE network to create new revenue streams and improve services in hard-to-reach areas. For example, remote management of prepaid service boxes, which are used to meter energy in some areas, could offer huge gains in convenience for Edesur and its customers alike.”
